​Easy Recipe for "Taho"

Taho is a Philippine snack food made of fresh soft/silken tofu, arnibal (brown sugar syrup), and pearl sago. The magtataho (taho vendor) is a common sight in the Philippines. The vendor carries two large aluminum buckets that hang from each end of a yoke.  Normally sold in the morning or until before noon. 


If you are craving for Taho, you can make your own at home. You will need, cooked sago, arnibal and extra soft tofu (photo below).  Just look for label soft or better if extra soft.

Cooking the pearl sago is pretty easy. Just add the pearls in boiling water and cook until transparent. Pearl sago is white when uncooked. It has to look like the picture below. If you like, you can add sugar while boiling sago.
Making arnibal or brown sugar syrup is pretty easy as well. Just boil 1 part water and 1 part brown sugar, add some pandan strips or just add vanilla if pandan leaves are not available.

INGREDIENTS:
  • 1 package silken tofu or extra soft tofu
​Tapioca Pearl Sago: 
  • 1/2 cup sago
  • 3 cups water
Arnibal/Brown Sugar Syrup
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup water

PROCEDURES
  • Cook sago by boiling water in  a saucepan. 
  • Add sago. Stir to prevent from sticking.
  • Cook until transparent.  About 15 minutes or more depending on the brand or size of sago. 
  • Drain and rinse in cold water.
  • Add some honey or agave to prevent from sticking. ​​
PREPARE THE SYRUP:
  • Boil water in  sauce pan.
  • Add brown sugar. 
  • Continue cooking until the sugar is completely dissolved. ​ ​​

​PREPARE TAHO:
  • Transfer the tofu in glass, cup or bowl. Microwave the extra soft tofu for 1 - 1 1/2 minutes.
  • Remove from the microwave. 
  • Add enough arnibal to sweeten. Add sago and lightly stir. 
  • Serve warm.
  • Enjoy!  ​
