This sweet flat rice cake called Palitaw is a favorite snack by many Filipinos. It is made from glutinous rice or glutinous rice flour mixed with water, cooked in boiling water and served with sweet coconut sesame mixture. It is not complete without the toasted sesame seeds.

Soft, sticky and chewy Palitaw is one of the easiest snack you can make!

palitaw recipe

Ingredients:
  • 2 cups glutinous rice flour
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup sesame seeds
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • fresh grated coconut
Note: If fresh grated coconut is not available, sweetened coconut flakes can be used. Make sure to adjust the sugar since the coconut flakes are already sweet.

​Procedure:
  • Combine glutinous rice flour and water. Adjust the water as needed. Mix until a dough is formed.
  • Take about 1 tablespoon of the dough and flatten with your thumb. 
  • Boil water in a pot and drop each dough into the boiling water. Dough is cooked when they start to float.
  • Remove and set aside. Allow to dry  and cool down.  
  • In a small pan, toast the sesame seeds. 
  • Combine toasted sesame seeds and sugar. Set aside.
  • Coat the cooked dough with grated coconut then add the sesame sugar mixture.
  • Enjoy.
