sweet & sour pork

This Chinese stir-fried dish is made from pork tenderloin, pineapple chunks, bell peppers and onion with a sweet and tangy sauce. A delicious homemade dish that is better than take out.

Pork tenderloins will need to be marinated for few hours first and when ready, a batter similar to a pancake mix consistency is needed to make a crispy coating for the pork tenderloins. It's a combination of flour, cornstarch, salt and beaten egg.

The sweet & sour sauce is very easy to make. Just combine pineapple juice from the pineapple chunks in can,  water, brown sugar, salt and banana sauce / ketchup.

And as usual, we need a sauce thickener which is a cornstarch diluted in water.

sweet & sour pork recipe

Ingredients: 
  • 1 pound pork tenderloin / top loin (cubed or cut into bite sized pieces)
  • 1 cup pineapple chunks ( I used the one in can and reserved the juice )
  • 4-6 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 medium onion, quartered
  • 1/2 green bell pepper, cut into cubes
  • 1/2 red bell pepper, cut into cubes
  • 1/2 yellow bell pepper, cut into cubes
  • Cooking oil for sauteing 

​​Batter:
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 1/4 cups water

Sweet & Sour Sauce:
  • 1/2 cup pineapple juice
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup banana sauce / ketchup
  • 1 tsp salt

Thickener:
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch dissolved in 1/2 cup water

Procedure: 
  • ​​Mix the sweet and sour sauce ingredients well and set aside.
  • Beat the batter ingredients with a hand beater until smooth.
  • Stir pork into batter until well coated.
  • In a deep skillet, add in the cooking oil enough for deep-frying. Once the oil is hot, deep fry the pork pieces until they turn golden brown and crispy. Dish out and drain on paper towels.
  • Heat up a wok and add in some cooking oil.
  • Add in the chopped garlic and stir fry until light brown.
  • Add onion and cook until translucent.
  • Add bell peppers and pineapple chunks.
  • Stir fry until you smell the peppery aroma from the peppers.
  • Add in the sweet and sour sauce. 
  • Add the dissolved cornstarch.
  • As soon as the sauce thickens, add the crispy fried pork pieces. Stir well with the sauce.
  • Serve hot with steamed white rice.
