Siomai as we call it in the Philippines but Siumai in other parts of Asia. It doesn't matter how it's being spelled. What matters is that, it is simple, easy to make, delicious and you can make it right in your own kitchen.
For some, wrapping is challenging but it is actually not. You can make it fancy like this photo below or you can place the filling in the middle of the wrapper, place the wrapper with meat in between your thumb and index finger (like holding a cone) and press the meat with a spoon until you get the right shape. Watch my video below how it is being wrapped so you can get an idea.

Watch me how I prepared and wrapped siomai

To enjoy your siomai, a delicious homemade sauce is a must have. What I make is a combination of 2 parts soy sauce and 1 part lemon. Then I add crunchy chili garlic from a bottle that my mom bought for me from the Philippines.

siomai recipe

INGREDIENTS:
  • 1  1/2 lb ground beef
  • 3/4 cup onion (chopped)
  • 3/4 cup carrots (chopped)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper
  • siomai wrapper

DIPPING SAUCE:
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp lemon or calamansi
  • 1 tsp crunchy chili garlic (optional)

Note: You can use pork, beef, chicken or any meat you like ;)

HOW TO MAKE SIOMAI:
  • Combine all the ingredients together.
  • Wrap the meat in siomai wrapper by placing about 1 tbsp of meat in the center of the wrapper then press and seal with water all the sides to the middle leaving an open space on top.  (See pictures above). Or press the meat with the wrapper in between your thumb and forefinger like holding a cone until it holds it's shape.
  • Place all the wrapped meat in a steamer brushed with some oil to avoid the wrapper from sticking.
  • Steam for 20-25 minutes.
  • Serve with dipping sauce.
  • Serve warm.
  • Enjoy!
