These Filipino steamed cakes are traditionally served during gatherings but is now an all-time favorite snack. They are easy to make and you can also add different colors if you prefer.

There are so many variations on how to make Puto.  I find rice flour and coconut milk a good combination and tastes better. I used colorful silicone baking cups in making them. They are easy to clean and a money saver since you don't need to use a cupcake liner. Please find the Amazon link below.

I suggest to also try making Puto Cheese using Bisquick mix. Click here for my Bisquick Puto Cheese recipe.

Using individual molds makes the steaming easy because most muffin pans won't fit on the steamer.

This batch was my first one and added star anise to it which adds flavor and aroma.

  • 2 cups rice flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 2 cups coconut milk
  • 1 tsp anise seed (optional)
  • Cheddar cheese for topping
Note: Recipe yields 16 pieces. You can cut the recipe in half like how I did on my video.

watch my youtube video below how to make puto cheese

HOW TO MAKE PUTO:
  • In a medium mixing bowl, sift the rice flour and white sugar.
  • Put-in salt and baking powder.
  • Add coconut milk and anise seeds (optional). Mix and blend thoroughly until mixture is smooth.
  • Grease the muffin pans with butter or put paper cups into the muffin pans. I used silicone baking cups. Please find Amazon link above.
  • Pour the mixture into the muffin pans and fill up to 2/3 full.
  • Steam for about 15 minutes.
  • Add cheese on top then continue steaming for another 10 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  • Serve warm.
  • Enjoy!
